Cannons vs. Covington Lumberjacks By: Lauren Fulton

Tonight was a fun night to be a Cannons fan. You’ve heard me say it time and time
again, but here in Purcellville, we like to have fun at the ballpark. A few hours prior to
game time, we were lucky enough to host the Roadducks band, who serenaded us
with covers of various classic rock songs, and other amazing songs from the 1970s
and 1980s. They played while the boys took their pre-game batting practice, and the
fans danced and sang along to some of their favorite childhood songs. The
atmosphere was electric, and everyone seemed to enjoy the beautiful 90-degree day
here in the heart of Purcellville.

On the mound for the evening was starting pitcher Austin King, (SO; San Jacinto
College North), who pitched for 4 innings, gave up 5 hits, and allowed 4 runs to score.
First in relief for the night was Jabbari Smith, (JR; undecided), who pitched for 2
innings, giving up 4 hits, but allowing no runs to score during his time on the mound,
securing the “win” for the game. Up next out of the bullpen was Mo Rodriguez, (JR;
Rice University), who pitched 1 inning, and gave up 1 hit, also allowing no runs to
score. Up next was Will Ricketts, (JR; Frostburg State University), who gave up 3 hits,
and allowed just 1 run to score, keeping the Cannons in the lead. Finally, our “save”
pitcher for the evening was none other than Luke Lyman, who came in and shut it
down in the ninth. He gave up no hits, and no runs, limiting the Lumberjacks to just 5
runs on the evening.

The Cannons offense came off the bench ready to play tonight, scoring 6 runs in just
the first inning! Bear Horowicz, (SO; University of North Carolina Chapel Hill), had an
incredible game at the plate as the DH for the evening – he successfully went 2 for 4
with a double that cleared the bases and a home run to give the Cannons some
necessary insurance runs late in the game. The ball was hit so hard that it flew over the
scoreboard, making it a “no-doubter” for the West Virginia native. Caleb Stewart, (JR;
Georgia State University), and Mikey Brinton, (JR; University of Arkansas Fort Smith),
were also hot at the plate, both hitting doubles that helped combine their total RBI’s to
3 of the runs scored throughout the game. Although the Cannons took the lead early,
they suffered a bit of a lull throughout the middle innings, but were still sharp enough to
clinch the 8-5 win over the Covington Lumberjacks.

The defense for the night was exceptional, allowing just one error the whole evening,                                                                                                 and executing each and every routine play. Catching for the Cannons tonight was fan-
favorite Jose Torres, who played excellent defense the whole evening. Playing 1st Base                                                                                               was Ryne Guida, (SR; Florida International University), playing second base was
Justin Acal, (SR; University of Pittsburgh), playing shortstop was Caleb Stewart, (JR;
Georgia State University), and rounding of the infield was Keegan Knuston, (SO; San
Jacinto College North) at third base. Playing left field was Chayce Bryant, (SR;
Southeastern University), playing centerfield was Mikey Brinton, (JR; University of                                                                                              Arkansas Fort Smith), and finishing off the defense was Joseph Eichelberger, (JR; Paul
D Camp).

The Purcellville Cannons will be back home tomorrow night to take on the New Market
Rebels here at Fireman’s Field – you know what to do, fans! We’ll see y’all back at the
ballpark at 7:00 pm!
