Purcellville Canons

Cannons vs. Covington Lumberjacks

Last night the Cannons played the Covington Lumberjacks in a much-anticipated home game. After being on the road for so long, the boys were looking forward to being back playing at home for the best fans in the Valley League. Unfortunately for the Cannons, the boys experienced a brutal rain delay, which set the game back for about an hour, and ruined the momentum we had prior to the break. The boys lost 14-2 against the Lumberjacks, adding to their losing streak. In all honesty, the boys are having a tough time – players are getting hurt, and the middle of the season always takes a toll on the boys. However, we still have a month left in the season with many more home games to come. They are all confident that once they “get back into the swing of things”, they will return to the team they were back at the beginning of the season.

Our starting pitcher for the evening was Seth Sumner, (SO; Cal State Fullerton), who pitched for 3 innings, allowing 2 hits, 2 walks, and gained 4 strikeouts for his first outing as a Cannon. He also allowed 3 runs during his time on the mound. First in relief for the evening was Alberto McCarthy, (SO; Erskine College), who pitched for 0.1 innings, giving up 1 hit, and 1 walk, but allowed 4 runs to score. Up next was Noah Ingle, (JR; North Greenville University), who pitched for 1.1 innings, giving up 3 hits, and 2 walks, allowing 3 runs to score with 1 strikeout on the evening. Up next was Jabbari Smith, (JR; undecided), who pitched for 1.1 innings, giving up 3 hits, 2 walks, and allowed another 3 runs to score. Our final pitcher for the evening was Matthew Reuscher, (SO; Elgin Community College), who pitched for 1 inning, who gave up 2 hits, 1 walk, and allowed 1 final run to score. All in all, the pitching staff has been suffering lately, however, with new adjustments and new people added to the team they are confident in their ability to bring command back to the mound.

There wasn’t much to note offensively for the evening, however Jose Torres, (SR; University of Louisiana Lafayette) and Chase Bryant, (SR; Southeastern University) both hit doubles which helped the team improve on the offensive side.

The defense for the evening made 3 errors, which helped contributed to the unfortunate loss for the evening. Catching for the Cannons was Jose Torres, who caught the entirety of the game. Playing first base was Ryne Guida, playing second base was Mikey Brinton, (Jr; University of Arkansas Fort Smith), playing shortstop was Justin Acal, (SR; University of Pittsburgh), and rounding off the infield was Keegan Knuston, (SO; San Jacinto College North). In the outfield for the night was Chayce Bryant in left field, playing center was Kainen Jorge, (SO; College of Central Florida), and playing right field was Brady Drawbaugh, (SR; Mt. St. Mary’s University).

The Cannons will return back to Fireman’s Field on Sunday, June 2nd to take on the Waynesboro Generals at 7:00 pm! Come on down to help us celebrate the holiday weekend with the boys!
