Cannons Fall to Royals

Cannons RHP John Lumpinski

The Purcellville Cannons hosted the Winchester Royals on opening night at Fireman's Field. John Lumpinski (Siena) started on the mound for the Cannons to open the 2021 season. He pitched 4.2 innings, giving up four hits, one earned run, one walk while striking out eight. Jarrett LoRusso (Roanoke College) took over for him in the fifth and got out of the inning without giving up any additional runs. LoRusso went 1.1 innings, giving up two hits, no runs, walked one, and struck out three. In total, the Cannons tallied four total hits in the game. Captain Jimmy Goldsmith (Valdosta State University) had one of those hits via a solo home run early in the contest. All four hits by Cannons players batted in the middle or bottom of the order. The score went back and forth the whole game. Purcellville would score a run, Winchester would answer with a score of their own. The game's crucial part came in the 8th inning when Parker Collier (Wallace-Dothan CC) was dealing out on the mound. He came in the inning prior and struck out all three batters. When he came back out in the 8th, Winchester batters were picking up his pitches better. Manager Brett Fuller took him out and brought in Lefty Jake Cothran (Florence-Darlington Tech College) to keep the lead intact for Purcellville. That, unfortunately, did not happen as one runner scored in the 8th inning to tie the game at (3-3).

In the 9th inning, Winchester took their first lead of the night with an RBI single from Austin Bulman (Rice University). After the Royals took the lead, there was no looking back. Royals relief Pitcher Michael Darrell Hicks (Undecided) earned the win. He pitched three innings without giving up a run to finish Winchester's 4-3 road victory. The Purcellville Cannons play a Doubleheader tomorrow on the road against the Covington Lumberjacks. The first pitch for Game 1 will be 5:30 PM ET. The Cannons will be back at Fireman's Field on Wednesday (6/9) for a 7:00 PM first pitch against the Strasburg Express.
