Cannons Make Most of Four Hits; Win Third in a Row The Purcellville Cannons (7-14) took the longest road-trip by distance possible in the Valley down to take on the Covington Lumberjacks (11-9) at Casey Field on Wednesday night. Despite only four hits at the plate, Cannons pitching stranded 12 Lumberjacks baserunners to win a tight one, 4-2.
Sam Knowlton (Pensacola State CC) earned the start on the mound for the Cannons, and went four strong innings. Knowlton gave up three hits and five walks, but struck out two and gave up the only two Covington runs of the night.
The Cannons got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning, taking advantage of two Lumberjack passed balls that scored BT Riopelle (Coastal Carolina) and Jarrett Pico (Elon) for a 2-0 lead. However, Covington took it back in the bottom of the inning on a wild pitch and passed ball from Purcellville to tie it at 2.
The Cannons put together a strong effort from the bullpen, with Angel Hernandez (Western Oklahoma) pitching in relief of Knowlton and earning the win. Hernandez gave up six hits in four innings, keeping the Lumberjacks off the board with no walks and four strikeouts.
With Purcellville coming to the plate in the eighth inning in a tie game, Chase Sanguinetti (Florida State) got hit by a pitch to get the Cannons their first baserunner. After Morgan Hyde (Coastal Carolina) came in to pinch run, Mike Brewer (Eastern Kentucky) singled to move him to third. So with a second and third situation, after Brewer stole a base, Andrew Kasiski (Hampden Sydney) singled home both of them to take the lead 4-2.
Completing the shutdown effort in relief, Nate Barolet (Florence-Darlington Tech) entered the game in a save situation. Barolet put down the Lumberjacks in order to earn his second save of the campaign and cap off the 4-2 win, the Cannons third in a row and fourth in their last five games.
The Purcellville Cannons return home to Firemans Field for games on Thursday and Friday against the Staunton Braves and New Market Rebels, respectively. Both games are scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
