Cannons Use Two Big Innings in Win Against Turks

Cannons Use Two Big Innings in Win Against Turks The Purcellville Cannons (6-14) played host to the Harrisonburg Turks (10-9) for a midweek game at Fireman’s Field. In a back-and-forth slugfest, the Cannons used seven unanswered runs to beat the Turks, 12-7. Dawson Rabb (Aquinas) earned the spot-start for Purcellville, but ran into early trouble. After a smooth first inning, Harrisonburg loaded the bases on a hit and three walks in the second inning. Avery Short (Sienna) came in relief and got the final out of the inning, stranding three runners. Rabb finished the game with 1.2 innings pitched, one hit, one run, three walks, and one strikeout. Short finished with a team-high four innings pitched, seven hits, four runs, no walks, and struck out six. The Cannons jumped right on the board in the bottom of the first, when Max Crabbe (Hawai’i) sent a leadoff home run over the left field fence to take a 1-0 lead. After losing the lead a few innings later, Purcellville sent eight batters to the plate in the third and scored four runs. That inning was highlighted by new-Cannon Jarrett Pico (Elon) doubling home two runs in his debut game to take a 5-2 lead. Jakob Mattos (Coastal Carolina) got out of a jam in the sixth inning, but it was after Harrisonburg stormed right back to take a 7-5 lead. The Cannons responded by sending ten to the plate and scoring five runs in the frame, fueled by a 2-RBI double from Nick Di Vietro (La Salle) and a Morgan Hyde (Coastal Carolina) 2-RBI single. Purcellville left the inning with a 10-7 lead. Mattos shut the door in relief, pitching the final 3.1 innings and giving up no hits, no runs, one walk, three strikeouts and earning the win out of the bullpen. Two more insurance runs from Crabbe to complete a 2-5 day with 3 RBI polished off the 12-7 win. The Cannons hit the road tomorrow to take on the Covington Lumberjacks, then return home for games on Thursday and Friday against the Staunton Braves and New Market Rebels at 7:00 PM.
