About an hour and a half from Fireman Stadium, a cannon is having some early season success. He is not in a cannons jersey at the moment, but in a Dukes uniform, representing James Madison University. Nick Stewart is second for the Dukes in innings pitched, and he has earned every one of them.
Over 20 innings pitched, Nick has collected 2 of James Madison’s 10 wins so far this season. Predominantly a starter, Stewart has appeared in 4 games thus far, and of the 4, 3 of them have had him starting on the bump for the Dukes.
Nick has done a great job of showing control when on the mound as he carries a 4.1 hits per 9 innings stat. Along with that, he has held his opponents to a .231 batting average. With all of those factors falling into place, Stewart is at a great place as far as ERA goes. He holds 2.70 ERA, giving up 8 runs and only 6 of them being earned. Stewart has also limited free passes, only giving out 4 base on balls over 78 at bats.
This is impressive on its own, but to put the cherry on top, Nick Stewart is only a Freshman. This early success has not gone unnoticed though. The week of February 27th, Nick was awarded the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week. Over that span he racked up 5 strikeouts, while only walking 1 when JMU beat UAlbany 6 to 2 according to www.caasports.com.
Nick looks to keep this rolling through the season as JMU goes into CAA play against Elon on Friday, March 23rd.
