Cannons notch Win #1 of 2019

Jose Aquino #7 Hit 2 HRs in contest vs Front Royal
Cannons Pitching Staff Toss 1-Hitter in First Win The Purcellville Cannons (1-4) hit the road for the first game of a four-game road trip against the Front Royal Cardinals (1-3) at Bing Crosby Stadium. Fueled by a season-high in runs and a dominant performance from the bullpen, the Cannons beat the Cardinals 6-1. Travis Keys (Aquinas College) earned the start for Purcellville and was able to get over some early trouble to put together four innings, only giving up one hit and one run while striking out three. Keys earned the win for the Cannons, bumping up to 1-0 on the season. The offense got started for Purcellville in the fourth inning when Jose Aquino (San Jacinto CC) knocked a two-run home run out of the park to put the Cannons ahead 2-1. It wasn’t the only damage Aquino was going to do, as he got right back to the plate in his next at bat to lead off the seventh inning and send another ball over the fence for his 2nd four-bagger of the night. Aquino finished the night 2-3 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBIs, along with his VBL-leading 3rd and 4th home runs. The bullpen locked it down once the Cannons had the lead. Nate Barolet (Florence-Darlington Tech), Jeffery Smith (Motlow State CC), and Taylor Borchers (Aquinas College) combined for five innings, only three walks, while giving up no hits, no runs, and striking out six. The Cannons added insurance runs in the ninth inning with three straight RBI basehits from Hernhy Lara (Western OK State), Kyle Hayes (James Madison), and Nick Di Vietro (La Salle) to complete the 6-1 win. Purcellville stays on the road Wednesday as they take on the Staunton Braves. The Cannons don’t return home until Sunday for another matchup the Braves.
